Not only the program “mounts” are structured by wood, but the main roof structure and its supports, that shadows and unifies the entire design, are also constructed using laminated wood.

Copii

Spa

2021
Tocantins, Brazil

CONCEPT |  Surrounded by white sand dunes and tropical vegetation, this unique spa takes advantage of the local topography curves and natural sun incidence to create a space that incites exploration, contemplation, and peacefulness.

Copii, is the indigenous word for termite, which served as both, mentor and method, inspiring the design to mimic their ecosystem, spreading out “mounts” of program throughout the terrain, which are built to enhance natural ventilation, insulation and structural strength.

The wood, locally sourced, laminated and computationally programmed to optimize the assembly process and minimize the use of material, is the main architecture protagonist, used in all areas where structure is needed.

The project is distributed in levels that follow the natural topography, where each elevation hosts a different experience, starting by the indoor spa area, then the sun bathing area and finally the pool level, which cantilevers over the nearby flowing river.
